As bad as Alves wants to get back into the octagon and avenge his loss to Fitch, he'll have to wait a few more months. Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch were originally suppose to meet at UFC 111 but then Alves was pulled from the fight with a brain anomaly. After Alves's successful brain surgery the fight was scheduled to take place at UFC 115 but now it looks like the fight will happen at UFC 117 in Oakland.
Alves is a big star at welterweight for the UFC and they did not want to rush Alves back inside the octagon so quickly. Pushing the fight back again was a smart move by the UFC and shows that the UFC does an excellent job in looking after their fighters. This move allows Alves just that extra bit of healing time to make sure everything is 100% with his health.
Moving this fight back also opens up some interesting fight possibilities for the UFC welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre. The Alves vs. Fitch fight was seen as a number one contender match for GSP's title, but now with the fight not happening until august, the UFC might have a new challenger in mind for GSP. If you ask GSP who he wants to fight its Strikeforce middleweight champion, Jake Shields. Shields just fought the last fight of his contract and becomes a free agent in a couple weeks. Dana White hides no fact that he wants to sign Shields and from the photos this past weekend at WEC 48, it looks like its only a matter of time before GSP and Shields finally meet in the octagon.
